I adapted it from another veggie burger recipe I found online. The one I found online was full of ingredients and I just wanted to use what I had on-hand—and it was delicious and it stuck so I now make it once a week at least! And it doesn’t require too many ingredients or anything fancy. Here we go! :)

You will need:

4 tablespoons of hickory BBQ sauce of your choice

1 15oz. can of Organic Black beans (find some without sodium chloride in it)

2 cups of cooked brown rice ( I use Lundberg Long Grain Brown-it’s organic and gluten free)

1 tablespoon of oats

a handfull of chopped onion (I like a lot of onion crunch and flavor so use to your liking)

1 teaspoon of Chili Powder

1/2 teaspoon of Ground Cumin

1/4 teaspoon of black pepper

1 teaspoon of sea salt (I use Alessi)

Cooking oil to grill in.

Avocado

Sprouted Wheat bun (I use Alvarado St.)

Directions:

In a large bowl, mash beans. Stir in 3 tablespoons of the barbecue sauce-reserve some for brushing. Now stir in the remaining ingredients. This will be a yummy sloppy mushy mess. Now instead of forming into patties-bc it’s too sloppy to do so-just scoop whatever amount that you want per burger into a frying pan with oil. Cook it for about 2 minutes on each “side”. Brush on some BBQ sauce as you move it around in the pan cooking it. Once finished, slop it onto a bun and top with fresh avocado!

Enjoy and let me know if you like it or have suggestions!

My book that I ordered came in!! I’m beyond excited! “Thrive foods” by Brendan Brazier has amazing reviews and is packed with 200 plant-based recipes!!

Oh-Update!- The Rescue Gum (see previous post) is good! The center has a nice, soothing flowery taste. The gum itself loses flavor quickly…but I actually liked that because the constant flavor of gum begins to aggravate me and gross me out after a while chewing it. I’ll still probably try other more natural gum as well.

In other news, here are my newest natural lifestyle purchases I...

In other news, here are my newest natural lifestyle purchases I made today! I’ve been curious and intrigued by Quinoa bc of the obvious craze going on right now about it. I’ll report back with a picture when I make something amazing with it this week!

Also, I like to chew gum-especially after lunch at work-just to keep things fresh and pleasant! :) Most every gum out today in typical stores is full of aspartame and chemicals. Years ago I researched a little about different gum and found out that Wrigley’s DoubleMint gum was one of the few that did not contain aspartame-so that has always been my go-to gum. However, products change so beware. I randomly recently decided to recheck the packaging about this and found that they now use aspartame. Thus they’ve lost my bizz-nass! So I’m on the hunt for my next gum! This one was at the check out at Whole Foods and is meant to be a stress reliever gum. It has a liquid center with 4 drops of flower extracts. I’ll let y’all know what I think! :)

I wore a cute little librarian hippie outfit today!! I actually won something through Facebook! I had been researching whole food supplements and came across this MegaFood company and “liked” them on Facebook! Yay me! I hope I get to choose the product I’ve won! :) will update later!

Me and Jason!

Me and Jason!

New Roots

Hello there!

My Name is Kelli and I’m starting this blog to share with you my creative endeavors in design, do-it-youself-ery, and last but certainly not least-vegan food! I’m 27 years old and graduated in Graphic Design at LSU in 2007 and currently live and work in Metairie, LA (a suburb of New Orleans that I grew up in). I’m married to Jason and we have have 2 dogs-Jack and Sawyer. Yes-we’re huge LOST fans and I have still not been able to fill the void in heart since the show ended. But I digress…

The reason I have named my blog “New Roots” is because I feel like I am moving into a new phase of my life. I’m ready to live the holistic life I’ve always admired and set down roots for my little future family that is developing. No I am not pregnant-but we want to have kids one day in the next few years and I want them to be brought into a healthy, happy, holistic environment. I have been a vegetarian for a little over 10 years now. This is something not too commonly found in New Orleans considering our food culture is surrounded in seafood and sausage. I’m a huge animal lover and eating animals never set well with me-so that all changed when I turned 17. My younger sister, Jenn, who was 10 when she gave up meat, inspired me to do what I always knew was right in my heart. And we’ve both been vegetarians ever since! Over the years, we’ve both flirted with the idea of veganism. It wasn’t until I read the book, “The PH Miracle” six months ago that I began to seriously consider giving up dairy and all animal products in my diet and life. Seeing “Food, Inc.” played a large part in this as well as the books “Skinny Bitch”, and “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You to Know About” by Kevin Trudeau. Beyond this, the documentaries “Forks Over Knives” and “Food Matters” also solidified my new path in life. I have been vegan for 2 months now and haven’t looked back on my decision. I also haven’t had a stomach ache in 2 months—which is new to me! I was starting to feel like stomach aches were just a normal part of eating.

Well, I do hope you enjoy my blog and posts full of creativity and yummy-ness! Look forward to tons of pictures!
